Nothing says holiday style to me quite like a classic plaid skirt or dress. Plaid is one of those timeless prints I look forward to wearing every holiday season, especially in traditional shades of red and green. It’s festive without needing much else to make an outfit feel special.
In today’s post, I’m sharing five classic plaid holiday outfits for petites, including two dresses, two skirts, and a tartan top paired with a full black taffeta skirt.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Boden Polly Dress
The Polly Dress from Boden is about as classic as holiday plaid gets. With its traditional red and green print, it’s a beautiful option for Christmas parties, church, or holiday gatherings.
The dress is made from a comfortable stretch jersey blend of 65% polyester, 34% viscose, and 1% elastane. The fabric has a little give, making it comfortable to wear, and it doesn’t wrinkle easily. It’s unlined but isn’t sheer.

I’m wearing the dress in Petite 0, and it fits me well overall. There is a little extra room at the waist, but the included belt cinches it in nicely for a more defined shape.
I styled the dress with gold heels and an ivory coat for a classic holiday look. I love how the lighter coat complements the red and green plaid without competing with it. For a little more warmth, you could also wear this dress with black tights and heels.

J.Crew Factory Willa Dress
The Willa Dress from J.Crew Factory is one of my favorite dress silhouettes. I’ve worn this style in different prints, and I love how well it works on a petite frame.
This holiday version features a pretty plaid mix of red, blue, and tan. It’s a little different from traditional red and green Christmas plaid, but still feels festive for the season.
The dress has a tiered midi silhouette with short sleeves that are well proportioned for petites. I especially appreciate that the sleeves aren’t overly long or voluminous, which can sometimes be an issue for me with standard sizing.
It’s made from 98% regenagri®-certified cotton and 2% elastane, and it’s machine washable, which is always a plus. I find this style to be true to size, and I’m wearing my usual Petite 00.
This is a great option for a family gathering, Christmas brunch, or even a casual holiday party.

Tartan Poplin Top + Black Taffeta Skirt
A classic tartan poplin top is a versatile piece to have in your holiday wardrobe because you can pair it with everything from jeans and trousers to skirts.
I’m wearing the top in XXS, and it’s made from 98% regenagri®-certified cotton and 2% elastane.
For this outfit, I dressed it up with a black taffeta skirt from J.Crew Factory. The skirt has a full, structured shape that makes even a simple top feel dressed up. I love the contrast between the classic plaid and the volume of the black skirt.
The skirt comes in petite sizing, but I chose standard sizing for a little extra length. When it comes to full skirts like this one, I actually prefer a maxi length over a midi length.
I’m wearing the skirt in standard XXS.
This combination would be perfect for a Christmas party or a dressier holiday gathering. You could also wear the tartan top more casually with jeans or a simple pair of black pants throughout the season.

Black and White Plaid Skirt + Lady Day Coat
Not every holiday outfit needs to be red and green. I love a classic black and white plaid, especially when it’s paired with simple winter pieces.
For this outfit, I started with a black and white wool-blend skirt from J.Crew Factory and paired it with a fitted black turtleneck and fleece tights. It’s a simple combination that looks polished while still being practical for cooler weather.
I’m wearing the skirt in 00.
I layered the outfit with the J.Crew Factory Lady Day Coat. This coat is a classic style that pairs beautifully with skirts and dresses. I find it to be true to size overall, but it does run slim through the arms. If you prefer a little more room for layering sweaters underneath, I recommend sizing up.
To finish the outfit, I added flat riding boots and a green scarf.

Navy Plaid Skirt + Ivory Top and Coat
For the last outfit, I went with a softer take on holiday plaid. This navy plaid circle skirt is one of those pieces that feels festive for the holidays without being overly seasonal.
I paired it with an ivory top and matching ivory coat for a light, classic winter look.
The skirt is a standard-size style that fits like a maxi on my 4’10” frame. I’m wearing it in XS, and it fits me well. It has a comfortable pull-on elastic waist, and although it’s unlined, the fabric isn’t sheer.
I styled it with heels, which I love with the longer length, but I think it would look equally nice with boots for a more casual winter outfit.
Of all the outfits in this post, this is one of the easiest to wear beyond Christmas. The navy plaid and ivory combination works just as well in January and February as it does during the holiday season.

Classic Plaid for the Holidays
One of the things I love most about plaid holiday outfits is how timeless they are. Whether it’s a traditional red and green plaid dress, a tartan top, or a simple black and white plaid skirt, these are pieces you can bring back into your wardrobe year after year.
I hope these five plaid holiday outfits give you a little inspiration for the season! Stay tuned for more petite-friendly holiday outfits.
