If you’ve ever wondered how to style different shoes with your workwear, this post is for you! I’m sharing four petite-friendly work outfits featuring shoe styles I’m often asked about. I’ll also share a few tips for pairing each style with different pants and keeping the proportions balanced on a petite frame.

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Work Outfit With Boots
When it comes to wearing boots to work, it’s all about finding the right balance between the style of boots and the style of pants. I went into more detail in this post, but here’s a quick overview of what I recommend:
- Choose boots with a slim, elongated toe. They don’t have to be pointed, but an elongated shape gives the boots a dressier look.
- Stick with full-length pants. Wide-leg, flare, and straight-leg styles that come to the top of your foot work best with boots.
- Skip cropped and slim-fitting pants. I find these styles harder to pair with boots. They can either be too short and show a gap between your boots and pants or the opening of the pants is too slim to go over the boots. They ultimately create a visual stop.
- Pair dresses and skirts with knee-high boots. Rather than ankle boots, opt for a pair of knee-high boots with a slim fit to your calves. This will keep the visual line long and lean and the overall outfit polished.
For this outfit, I chose a pair of slim, pointed-toe boots with a low, narrow heel. They have the polished look of a pair of heels but offer the extra warmth and coverage of boots.
I paired them with the crepe drape wide-leg trousers from LOFT and a tucked-in top for a simple, balanced outfit. In petite the pants have a 11.5″ rise and a 27.5″ inseam – they are true to size.

Work Outfit With Ballet Flats
Ballet flats are comfortable, easy to style, and a great alternative to heels when you want something a little more feminine than loafers.
One of the things I love most about ballet flats is how versatile they are. Their slim profile doesn’t add a lot of visual weight to an outfit, so they work well with almost any style of pants, along with skirts and dresses. I don’t have many rules when it comes to styling ballet flats for work, but if you want to create a leg-lengthening effect, here are two tips:
- Choose a V-shaped vamp. V-vamp ballet flats are popular this season, so they’re easy to find. The V shape creates an elongated look and feels a little more polished than traditional round-toe ballet flats with a bow.
- Choose nude flats or a color close to your pants. Keeping an outfit low contrast can create a lengthening effect. If you’re wearing a skirt or dress with bare legs, nude flats are a great choice. With brown or black pants, choosing flats in a similar color creates the same effect. That said, because ballet flats have such a slim profile, I don’t think matching colors is as important as it can be with loafers. You can have a little more fun with color!
For this outfit, I chose a pair of chocolate brown flats from Quince. They’re a great example of both tips, with a V-shaped vamp and a color that’s close to my pants. While I love the way they look, they run about a half size small, and after wearing them a few times, I’ve noticed they rub against my ankle bone. So, while they’re beautiful, they may not be quite as comfortable as I had hoped.
I paired them with crepe wide-leg pants and a striped funnel-neck sweater for an outfit that’s relaxed and comfortable but still polished enough for work. The pants are also from Quince and run a little large, so you may want to size down. They have an 11″ rise and a 28″ inseam.

Work Outfit With Sneakers
Sneakers have become a popular choice for business casual outfits, especially in workplaces with a more relaxed dress code. They pair easily with wide-leg pants, jeans, and straight-leg styles. When it comes to wearing sneakers to work, I find a few things help keep the outfit balanced and polished:
- Choose a slim-profile sneaker. Low-profile sneakers are especially popular this season, so there are plenty of styles to choose from. I prefer a slimmer shape for workwear because it doesn’t add too much visual weight to the outfit.
- Stick with neutral colors. Depending on your workplace, you may be able to have more fun with color, but neutral sneakers are a safe choice and easy to pair with different outfits.
- Balance the outfit with a polished top. Adding a blazer, cardigan, or button-down shirt helps dress up the sneakers and makes the overall outfit feel more appropriate for work.
For this outfit, I chose a pair of Adidas Handball Spezial sneakers. They’ve been popular for a while, but I didn’t jump on board until this season.
I tried the Adidas Samba sneakers in the past and found them to be too big for me (I’m a size 5), so I hadn’t tried any other Adidas styles. After hearing so many rave reviews about the Spezial sneakers, I decided to give them a chance. I’m glad I did! They fit me well and are comfortable to wear.
I paired the sneakers with corduroy pants and a blazer. The pants are true to size and have a 10″ rise and a 27.5″ inseam in petite sizing. Corduroy pants are a little more casual, so if you wanted to dress up this outfit further, you could swap them for a pair of tailored wide-leg trousers.

Work Outfit With Loafers
Loafers are a classic choice for workwear and pair well with everything from ankle-length trousers to full-length wide-leg pants. They’re versatile, but there are a couple of things I keep in mind when styling them on a petite frame:
- Choose a slim, elongated toe. I prefer loafers with a sleek shape and a slightly longer toe. This helps create visual length without adding too much bulk to the bottom of an outfit.
- Keep the colors low contrast. When I’m wearing a skirt or ankle-length pants, I prefer lighter loafers that are close to my skin tone. With full-length pants, I like to choose loafers in a similar color to the pants. I actually tried a dark pair of loafers with this outfit, and the contrast immediately made my legs look shorter.
For this outfit, I chose my tried-and-true Lorraine Loafers from Sam Edelman. I’ve recommended these loafers many times because they’re comfortable right out of the box and easy to style.
I paired them with straight-leg corduroy pants from Old Navy, a short-sleeve sweater, and a blazer for a polished business casual outfit.
The corduroy pants are affordable, and I love the color. I’m wearing them in Petite 00, but I find they run large. If you’re between sizes or prefer a closer fit, I recommend sizing down if possible.

What Shoes Are Best for Business Casual Outfits?
I don’t think there’s one shoe style that’s best for every business casual outfit. It really depends on your personal style, the pants you’re wearing, and your workplace dress code. I didn’t include heels here, because they’re an obvious choice that works well with just about every outfit.
For petites, I think the biggest thing to consider is how the shoes work with the length and shape of your pants. In general, you can’t go wrong with a low profile style, in a low contrast color.
Whether you prefer sneakers, boots, loafers, or ballet flats, there are plenty of ways to put together comfortable and polished outfits for work without relying on heels.
