I shared three petite-friendly midi and maxi skirt options last week, and the maxi skirt from Abercrombie quickly became my favorite. Even though it’s the longest of the three, the length actually works best on my frame. Paired with the high rise, it gives a really elongating effect—and made me look the tallest of all three options.

After sharing that post, I got a lot of requests for styling tips, so I’m delivering in this one. Here are four outfit ideas, along with a few easy tricks for balancing a voluminous skirt on a petite frame.

Petite-Friendly Maxi Skirt Outfits: 4 Ways to Style It

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Why This Skirt Works

Take a look at the photos below. I shared three lengths of cotton skirts to show how each one looks on my frame and help you decide which you might prefer. The clear favorite was the last option—the maxi boho skirt from Abercrombie—and I have to agree.

  • The Abercrombie skirt was the longest option I shared, but the length actually made me look taller.
  • It’s 100% cotton, but not cotton poplin—so it has a softer, more relaxed feel. I love cotton poplin for a polished look, but it can wrinkle and crease easily and isn’t always the easiest to steam.
  • The skirt fits true to size with a comfortable stretch waistband. I wear it in Petite XXS
  • It’s fully lined and not see-through, but since it’s white, I still recommend nude undergarments or adding a slip for extra coverage.

How to Style a Maxi Skirt as a Petite

  • Choose light, low-profile shoes: Go for neutral styles with a slim silhouette. The more skin you can show on your foot, the better—think sandals or ballet flats. Heavier styles like chunky sneakers or loafers can visually cut the leg line and make you look shorter. Avoid thick straps and high-contrast shoes.
  • Wear the skirt at your natural waist: While some styles can be worn lower on the hips, wearing it higher helps elongate your legs and keeps your proportions balanced.
  • Define your waist with your top: Tuck your top in or choose styles that are cropped to hit right at the waistband.
  • Keep it simple: I would skip heavy layering with this skirt if you’re petite. Keep it light and simple to balance the volume of the skirt.

Four Outfit Ideas with a Maxi Skirt for Petites

If you search for white cotton poplin maxi skirt outfits you’ll see the same black and white/vest combinations over and over again. I made it a point to try something different with my skirt. I love those chic combinations but you’ve seen them before.

Short Sleeve Cardigan + Scarf

You may recognize this top from a recent mini capsule wardrobe I shared. It has a longer length with an open bottom, so it looks really cute worn untucked, but it’s also thin enough to tuck in—especially with this skirt. I wear the top in Petite XS and would say it’s true to size.

I tried it both ways and ended up preferring it tucked in to better define the waist. I love how these neutral mesh ballet flats pair with the skirt—they keep the look light and elongating on the bottom.

I added a scarf for a little interest, but if it’s too warm, you could always tie it onto your bag instead.

All White + Scarf

In this outfit, I went with an all-white look. A monochromatic outfit like this naturally creates a lengthening effect, which is always great for petites.

To add a little interest, I styled a scarf three different ways—around the neck, at the waist, and tied onto a bag.

The sleeveless cotton poplin top is true to size. It also comes in petite, but I don’t think it’s necessary—regular sizing fits me well, including at the arm openings. I’m wearing it in XXS.

With a Boho Top

This soft yellow boho top felt like a perfect match for the skirt. It has similar lace details, and while it’s a bit voluminous, it balances nicely when tucked in.

I’m wearing the top in Petite XXS, and it has a relaxed, roomy fit.

Vest + Cotton Skirt

A vest is an easy pairing with a white cotton skirt. You could opt for linen for a more tailored look, denim for something casual, or a crochet style like this one.

The vest I’m wearing here is from Kohl’s. It comes in petite sizing and fits well, but it is open knit, so you’ll want to layer it over a camisole. I’ve linked my favorite option from Kohl’s that I’ve been wearing for years.

When it comes to styling something long and voluminous on a petite frame, the key is creating balance. Highlight your waist, elongate your legs, and you’re good to go!
