I tried four different mid-length denim shorts to compare the fit, comfort, and overall look. In this post, I’m breaking down each pair—including rise, inseam, and sizing—so you can find the option that works best for you.

Petite-Friendly Denim Shorts Review: 4 Mid-Length Styles Compared
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Madewell Perfect Vintage Mid-Length Jean Short (Irmo Wash)
- Rise: 10.5”
- Inseam: 5”
- Size Worn: 25 (sized up)
- Fabric: Rigid denim
These are one of my favorite pairs in the lineup. They have a high rise and a longer 5” inseam, which gives great coverage without feeling too long.
They’re low stretch and run small—I sized up to a 25 and would recommend sizing up in this pair across the board.
The fit is especially good through the thighs—roomy and comfortable without looking oversized.
Verdict: One of the best-fitting and most flattering options.

J.Crew Factory Mid-Rise Modern Denim Short
- Rise: 10” (labeled mid-rise)
- Inseam: 4.5”
- Size Worn: 25 (sized up)
- Fabric: Soft stretch denim
These are the most comfortable pair in this post. The denim is lightweight and easy to wear, and I didn’t experience any ride-up. I sized up, as I typically do with shorts, which gives me a little extra room in the waist and thighs. Even though they’re labeled mid-rise, they sit closer to a high rise on my frame.
Verdict: Best for comfort and all-day wear.

Abercrombie Dad Shorts
- Rise: 11”
- Inseam: 5”
- Size Worn: 25 (sized up)
- Fabric: Rigid denim
These have a high rise and a relaxed fit through the thighs, which I really like. The denim is thicker and more rigid, giving them a classic structured look. They do ride up slightly with wear, but overall are still comfortable. If you’re looking for a white pair, this is a great option—the fabric is thick and not see-through.
Verdict: One of the most flattering, especially if you like a structured fit.

Old Navy Wow Shorts
- Rise: 10″
- Inseam: 4”
- Size Worn: 00 (true to size)
- Fabric: Soft stretch denim
These are the most casual and stretchy option of the four. They’re lightweight, comfortable, and have good room through the thighs. They are the shortest pair in this post with a 4” inseam, so they show a bit more leg.
Verdict: Best budget-friendly, casual option.

Whether you’re looking for a high-rise, structured pair or a soft, stretchy option, you really can’t go wrong with any of these. They all have a modest inseam and a comfortable, flattering fit.
