Straight-leg jeans are a classic, versatile denim style that’s easy to dress up or down. They work with everything from ballet flats and sneakers to loafers and boots. In this post, I’m sharing four shoe styles I wear with straight-leg jeans, plus a few tips for getting the proportions right, especially if you’re petite.

What Shoes to Wear With Straight-Leg Jeans: A Petite Style Guide
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Choosing the Right Straight-Leg Jeans
When it comes to straight-leg jeans, I prefer a pair with a slightly wider leg opening rather than a slim straight fit. I find the wider opening makes them more versatile with different shoes, especially boots. They have a relaxed, classic shape without being as wide as a pair of wide-leg jeans.
For this post, I’m wearing the Levi’s Ribcage Straight Ankle Jeans. I’m wearing them in a size 25, one size up from my usual size, with a 27″ inseam. They’re made from 99% cotton, so they have a thick, rigid denim feel that holds its shape.
Although they’re called ankle jeans, the 27″ inseam gives me a longer fit on my 4’10” frame. I like the way they fall with different shoes, and the wider 17″ leg opening makes them easy to style.
1. Straight-Leg Jeans With Ballet Flats
Ballet flats are one of my favorite shoes to wear with straight-leg jeans. They’re a classic combination that works for everyday outfits and can easily be dressed up with a sweater, cardigan, or blazer.
I especially like the way a wider straight-leg opening falls over ballet flats. The jeans have a relaxed shape, while the flats keep the outfit looking polished and feminine.
For petites, I like choosing ballet flats with a lower vamp and an elongated toe. These details can help create a more elongated look, especially when the jeans fall close to the top of the foot.

2. Straight-Leg Jeans With Sneakers
For a casual outfit, I love pairing straight-leg jeans with low-profile sneakers.
I prefer a slim, low-profile sneaker over a chunky style. I find that the slimmer shape balances the straight leg without adding too much bulk at the bottom of the outfit. You can play with different colors if you like, just stick to a slim style.
You can wear sneakers with both full-length and cropped straight-leg jeans. I personally like a length that falls close to the top of the sneaker for a clean, relaxed look.

3. Straight-Leg Jeans With Loafers
Loafers are another great option for straight-leg jeans, especially when you want something a little dressier than sneakers.
I prefer a slim, refined loafer with straight-leg jeans. Similar to ballet flats, a sleek shape looks balanced with the wider leg opening without adding too much bulk.

4. Straight-Leg Jeans With Boots
Boots are one of my favorite ways to wear straight-leg jeans in the fall and winter. Just like with wide-leg jeans, I prefer a boot with a slim, tall shaft that fits underneath the jeans.
The key is choosing a boot that’s narrow enough around the ankle and calf to tuck neatly under the jeans without creating bulk. I also prefer boots with a sleek, elongated toe. This helps create a leg-lengthening effect, especially when the jeans fall over the top of the boots.
Although I prefer straight-leg jeans with a wider opening, you can also wear boots this way with slimmer straight-leg styles. Just make sure the leg opening is wide enough to accommodate the shaft of the boots without bunching or pulling.

What About Cropped Straight-Leg Jeans?
If you prefer cropped straight-leg jeans, you can still wear all four of these shoe styles. Ballet flats, sneakers, and loafers all work well with a shorter length.
When it comes to boots, I recommend choosing a pair with a shaft that’s tall enough to reach underneath the hem of the jeans. This prevents a gap of exposed ankle between the jeans and boots, creating a more continuous line.
