I’ve really come to love wide-leg jeans. They’ve maintained popularity for several seasons now. Along with relaxed straight jeans, I wear wide-leg jeans more than any other style.
If you’re petite and new to wide-leg jeans, you may feel a little lost on what shoes to wear with them. I know I felt the same way at first. However, I have found over time that many different shoes go with wide-leg jeans and are actually more comfortable to wear and style than the ankle-bearing rules we used to follow with skinny jeans.
My rule? Go for shoes that are slim and sleek in profile. They balance out the volume of the jeans and keep everything looking streamlined. You can wear any color you love, but I usually lean toward lighter shades—they just make my legs look a little longer. If you love dark colors, I’ll share a few tips for choosing a style that elongates even in dark colors. Today I’m sharing my favorite shoes to wear with wide-leg jeans if you’re petite: ballet flats, sneakers, loafers, and boots.

What Shoes to Wear With Wide Leg Jeans if You’re Petite
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
Ballet Flats + Wide Leg Jeans
Ballet flats are probably the easiest shoe option for wide-leg jeans. They’re lightweight, classic, and don’t add any extra bulk at your feet. I wear ballet flats with my wide-leg jeans as long as the weather will allow. I choose a nude option from Sam Edelman most often, but lately I’ve been loving a dark brown option from Madewell. The Greta Glove Flats from Madewell have an elongated toe with a v shaped vamp (the part of the shoe that meets your toes). The shape and length of the shoes elongate, even in a dark color.
- I love a nude or neutral pair because they go with everything.
- A pointed toe flat will give you extra leg length, but a round toe is just as timeless.
- Choose a style with a v shaped vamp for more leg length.
- I usually skip flats with heavy straps or chunky details since they cut off the line of the leg.

Sneakers + Wide Leg Jeans
Yes—you can definitely wear sneakers with wide-leg jeans. I choose low-profile styles instead of chunky athletic sneakers. I remember that with skinny and straight jeans, we always wore them ankle-length. So in the winter, we suffered from bare ankles. With wide-leg jeans, you can wear nice, warm, tall socks under your jeans and keep those ankles covered.
- Think Adidas Gazelles, Sambas, Converse, or Gola Elans/Badminton sneakers.
- I’m wearing the Gola Elan sneakers in the bone and white colorway in this post. They’re super comfy, true to size (starting at size 5), and the light color helps keep my legs looking longer.
- If you love color, go for it! Just stick to a slimmer profile.

Loafers + Wide Leg Jeans
If you want to make your outfit feel a little more polished, loafers are perfect. I go for styles with a sleek, elongated toe and avoid overly round or chunky styles with heavy buckles or stitching.
- I usually go for a sleeker style, like the Sam Edelman Lorraine Loafers. They have a slightly elongated toe that makes your legs look longer.
- I avoid chunky loafers with big stitching or buckles because they tend to look heavy on petites.
- A streamlined loafer balances wide leg jeans without overwhelming your frame.

Boots + Wide Leg Jeans
Boots are my go-to in the fall and winter, and they work really well with wide-leg jeans—if you pick the right style. I choose a style again with a sleek, slim toe. It doesn’t have to be sharply pointed; an elongated round or square toe works too. I also look for a slim shaft that fits close to my ankles so they tuck cleanly under the jeans.
- A pointed or almond-shaped toe makes your legs look longer.
- I’d skip round-toe boots with wide leg jeans since they can hide under the jeans and shorten your legs. If you love Chelsea boots, I think they work better with straight leg jeans.

What Length Should Wide Leg Jeans Be Worn?
You can wear wide-leg jeans cropped or full-length, but since we’re heading into fall, I’ll focus on how I wear them full-length. If you’re used to gauging your inseam for a pair of skinny or straight jeans, you’ll find your inseam is longer for a full-length wide style. For example, I would choose a 25″ inseam for my skinny and slim straight jeans but need a 27.5″-28″ inseam for full-length wide-leg jeans. Your measurements will vary from mine due to proportion variation, but in general I like to wear my wide-leg jeans 1/2-1″ above the floor so they cover my ankles and the tops of my shoes without bunching heavily at the ankles.
