If I were building my summer wardrobe from scratch, these are the 10 pieces I’d buy first. This mix gives you a versatile foundation you can mix, match, and repeat all season long—without overbuying. As always, everything is petite-friendly and easy to wear in real life.
10 Pieces I’d Buy to Build a Petite-Friendly Summer Wardrobe (From Scratch)
My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.
10 Pieces
When putting this post together, I resisted the urge to just curate a “pretty” collection and focused instead on the pieces I truly reach for in real life. These are foundational staples—simple bottoms paired with easy tops, or styled with a fun statement piece when you want a little more interest. They’re also the two pairs of shoes I wear most, and that go with just about everything in my closet.
I’ve heard from readers who’ve had to rebuild their wardrobes—whether after something as difficult as a house fire or simply due to a size change—and needed a place to start. So this isn’t fussy or overthought. It’s practical, versatile, and built for real life. I curated this list from pieces I personally wear the most but if you want to buy all of it from one place, I could source it all from Quince. A lot of what I chose is already from Quince but for the pieces that aren’t I will link a Quince option (except denim shorts, those are not currently offered).

Light Wash Jeans
I’ll always be a jeans-and-a-top kind of gal, so jeans are a given for me year-round. For summer, I’ve been loving a pair of light wash cropped wide-leg jeans from J.Crew Factory. They’re 99% cotton with a touch of stretch—lightweight with a little extra room to stay cool in the summer.
The jeans come in petite, but I chose the classic length for a longer inseam. I prefer a cropped wide-leg that hits at the top of my foot rather than showing my ankle. If you need or prefer a shorter them, the petite sizing of these jeans has a 24.5″ inseam.
I picked this pair for the fabric weight and light wash, but my next pick—and one of my most-worn styles—is the Bella Relaxed Straight Jeans from Quince.

Denim Shorts
Denim shorts are another go-to for me. If I could only buy one bottom for summer, it would be a great pair of denim shorts styled with a variety of tops.
I chose a pair from Madewell for this post, but I’ve also rounded up and reviewed several other options if you’re looking for a different style. The Perfect Vintage Shorts from Madewell have a high rise and a 5″ inseam. My days of shorty shorts are behind me—despite having short legs, I prefer a mid-length pair for a more balanced look.
They’re 99% cotton with a touch of stretch. They do run small, so I recommend sizing up.

Linen Shorts
If you need something breathable and lightweight, linen shorts are another piece I’d add. I don’t reach for them as often as my denim shorts, but on those hot, humid summer days, they’re a must.
The pair I chose for this post is from Quince. They’re fully lined—so not sheer, which isn’t always easy to find with linen shorts. I wear them in a size 0 and they fit me well. They have a button and zipper closure with stretch at the back of the waist for a comfortable fit.

Cotton Skirt
I chose a skirt instead of a dress here because it’s more versatile. White cotton skirts have been especially popular this season and make a great foundational piece.
For this post, I went with the yellow version (it also comes in white). The skirt is 100% organic cotton and fully lined. It washes well, and while cotton poplin can wrinkle, the tiers and details help keep it looking polished throughout the day. I love the yellow skirt but for true versatility, go with white.

Classic White T-Shirt or Tank Top
I chose my all-time favorite tank top for this post, but if you’re looking for something different, I’ve also rounded up other basic tees in a separate post. My favorite is from Quince—it’s a cotton boatneck tank.
I love this top because the fit is especially flattering, whether worn on its own or layered. I tend to prefer more fitted tees—they balance out more voluminous bottoms and are easier to layer—but of course, that comes down to personal preference.
This tank is currently sold out, but Quince restocks it often, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.
Oxford Cotton Top
I wear button-down tops often in the spring and summer. They’re roomy and relaxed without looking frumpy.
I chose an organic cotton option from Quince with a relaxed fit. It’s made from oxford cotton, so it’s thicker, softer, and less prone to wrinkling than cotton poplin. I wear it in XS, and it has an intentionally oversized fit.
Statement Top
Basics are great, but adding 1–2 statement tops can give your outfits a little more variety. For this post, I chose a cropped option from Gap. It hits right at the rise of my high-rise bottoms, including the skirt, which makes it easy to style.
I’m wearing it in XXS and it fits me well. The embroidery is slightly open, but it’s well placed—you could technically wear it with a nude bra, though I prefer to layer it with a camisole.
Cardigan
Cool mornings and overly air-conditioned spaces always call for a cardigan—I won’t go to a restaurant in the summer without one. Lately, I’ve been reaching for cropped styles. They work well worn open, draped over your shoulders, or buttoned up.
I chose a lightweight, well-priced option from Old Navy that I’ve been wearing often. I have it in Petite XS, and it fits me well. If you want fully natural fibers, this cashmere cardigan from Quince is my top pick.
Dolce Vita Kenley Sandals TTS
These are a true-to-size, go-with-everything pair of sandals. There is definitely a break-in period, though. At first, they were quite uncomfortable across my toes and ankles, and I wasn’t sure I could fully recommend them. However, after wearing them for a while, the straps softened and loosened, and they’re now much more comfortable. I chose these because they truly go with everything.
J. Crew Factory Woven Ballet Flats TTS
These neutral ballet flats add a little interest with their textured finish. They fit true to size and were comfortable right out of the box, with no break-in period needed. If these are sold out in your size, this pair is similar.
Accessories
If I were only going to buy one bag, it would be this woven crossbody from Quince. For a little added interest, I also love this straw bag from Sézane. It’s a bit of an investment, but I’ve had mine for a few years and still look forward to pulling it out every summer.
To finish the outfits, I’d keep accessories simple—gold earrings and a delicate necklace work with everything.
If you want to see a few outfit combinations with some of these pieces, I included many of them in this recent mini capsule.
If I were starting my summer wardrobe from scratch, these are the pieces I’d build around. They’re simple, versatile, and easy to mix and match for everyday outfits. Nothing fussy—just reliable staples that work together and actually get worn. Whether you’re refreshing your closet or starting over, this is a solid, petite-friendly foundation to make getting dressed easier all season long.
