I’ve always loved simple outfits—you can probably tell from what I share here. I naturally gravitate toward neutral pieces that mix easily with other items and have a classic feel, so they last in my wardrobe for years to come.

While I love that fashion is a way to express yourself, I don’t think you have to over-accessorize if that’s not your style. I’m very much a “same gold hoops and a delicate necklace every day” kind of person, rather than having a collection of statement jewelry. I also tend to rely on one or two bags each season that work with just a few pairs of shoes.

As an East Coast girl, my style leans classic and slightly preppy. Growing up, I loved putting outfits together but didn’t always have the budget to buy new pieces, so I learned early on how to make the most of what I had. That’s really where my love for versatile, mix-and-match outfits—and ultimately capsule wardrobes—began.

In today’s post, I’m styling six simple outfits for spring built from easy, go-to combinations I rely on often. While the outfits feature different pieces, I’m restyling the same accessories throughout to show how a few consistent finishing touches can pull everything together.

Six Simple Outfit Combinations & Go-To Accessories

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

The Accessories I Wear Regularly

  • everyday jewelry (gold hoops, necklace)
  • 1–2 bags
  • neutral shoes

Daily Jewelry:

I used to buy a lot of costume jewelry, but earlier this year I made a point to invest in a few gold pieces I could wear every day instead. I found that while costume jewelry can be expensive, it often doesn’t last.

So I picked up a pair of small gold hoops, a delicate necklace, and a simple bracelet from Quince that I can wear daily. I still mix in a few costume pieces here and there, especially with tops that just need a little more at the neck, but I don’t rely on them the way I used to. My Quince jewelry has held up beautifully. I did, unfortunately, break the bracelet recently when it got caught on something, so I need to fix it. I’ve been wearing this bracelet from J.Crew Factory (a costume piece) a lot lately instead.

Go With Everything Bags:

I bought this straw bag from Sézane a couple of years ago, and it’s one I love pulling out every spring and summer. It pairs beautifully with both dresses and casual outfits and has become a seasonal staple for me.

I also like having a neutral crossbody as a second option. I’ve worn the leather sling bag from Quince a ton, but I recently picked up their handwoven bag and think it may become my new go-to. It’s a bit larger than the sling but still proportionate for my frame. It comes in both small and large—I’m wearing the small—and includes both a shoulder and crossbody strap. The crossbody strap was a bit long on me, so I used a leather hole punch to add an extra hole and wear it shorter.

Neutral Shoes:

The one petite dressing rule I almost never break is wearing light, neutral, low-profile shoes. It’s the one trick that consistently helps create the illusion of longer legs.

In the spring and summer, I tend to rotate through about four or five pairs of shoes. I shared five options in a recent post, but for simple, everyday outfits like these, I could easily get by with just one pair of sandals and one pair of ballet flats.

Simple Spring Outfit Combinations for Petites

Printed Pants + Cardigan

I chose printed pants to add a little interest to this otherwise simple outfit. The Palmer Pants from LOFT have a 26.5″ inseam in petite and fit true to size. They held up well in the wash without heavy wrinkling or noticeable shrinkage. They are sold out in this color, but available in blue and white. You could accomplish the same outfit with blue and white and a light blue or yellow cardigan.

I paired them with a cashmere cardigan from Quince in a soft spring-to-summer color. Since the cardigan is longer, I left it untucked and opened the bottom buttons slightly to show the rise of the pants. Buttoning it all the way would have shortened the look of my legs, but leaving it open draws the eye upward and creates a lengthening effect.

Why it works for petites
I added length with high-rise bottoms, drew attention to my waist with the undone buttons, created longer lines at the arms by pushing back the sleeves, and finished the look with light, neutral shoes to elongate the leg line.

Maxi Skirt + Cardigan

A white cotton skirt can be beautiful for spring and summer, but it can also be tricky for petites to wear. I’ve tried a few of the trending styles and didn’t love the fit or the feel of the fabric on most of them. I recently tried this option from Abercrombie, and it feels just right.

The skirt is 100% cotton, fully lined, and has tiered layers with lace details. It’s definitely a fuller skirt and hits close to the top of my feet, so to balance the volume and length, I paired it with a slim, cropped top and light, neutral shoes.

Even though it’s lined, I do find it slightly see-through—it shows a white lining at the hips—so I plan to wear it with a slip. A white slip would help blend that layer, while a nude slip ensures undergarments don’t show through.

Why it works for petites
Or really, why this can work for petites—because I don’t think every petite will love this combination due to the volume and length. I created balance with a slim, cropped cardigan and buttoned it up to draw the eye upward (you could also unbutton the top buttons, especially if you have a larger chest). I pushed back the sleeves to add length through the arms and chose shoes close to my skin tone to avoid breaking up the leg line.

Oversized Button Down + Cropped Jeans

This outfit is proof that you don’t always have to tuck in your top or wear a slim, tailored button-down to balance a petite frame. I’m wearing an oversized cotton button-down from Quince with cropped wide-leg jeans from J.Crew Factory.

There are a few things at play here. First, the oversized shirt is worn untucked, but I used the same trick as with the cardigan and left the bottom buttons undone. I also left several top buttons open to create length at both the top and bottom of the outfit. I pushed the sleeves back to add length through my arms and added a crossbody bag to define my waist and break up the longer line of the shirt.

The jeans are a cropped wide-leg style, which can be tricky on a petite frame. A few years ago, I would have said to wear this style at the ankle bone, but with current trends (and a bit of trial and error), I actually think they look best when they hit closer to the top of your foot. Paired with low-profile shoes, this avoids the visual break at the ankle and instead creates a longer leg line.

One thing to note—this length works best with shoes that show a bit of skin on the top of your foot, like ballet flats or sandals. Shoes like sneakers or boots that cover that area can shorten the look. These jeans also come in petite with a 24.5″ inseam if you prefer a shorter length.

Why it works for petites
This outfit is low contrast, with the top close in color to the jeans, which helps create a longer line. I added length at both the top and bottom by leaving buttons undone, defined my waist with the crossbody bag, and lengthened my arms by pushing back the sleeves. I finished the look with light, neutral shoes to help elongate the legs.

Pull On Shorts + Cardigan

I went for another cropped cardigan in this outfit, paired with pull-on crepe shorts. The shorts are the Lodge Shorts from Aritzia, made from the same wrinkle-resistant crepe fabric as the Lodge Pants, and they drape beautifully.

Styling these shorts really comes down to drawing attention to the waist. They’re high-rise with a bit of volume and a 5″ inseam. That length can border on feeling a little long for petites, but it’s balanced by the higher rise and the fuller shape. The added volume is not only comfortable, but also helps create a more streamlined look through the thighs.

The cropped cardigan draws the eye to the waist and highlights the rise of the shorts, making it a great transitional piece. As the weather warms up, I would swap it for a cropped or tucked-in top for a similar effect. The shorts do run smaller than the Lodge Pants—I initially bought XXS, but plan to go back for XS for a better fit.

Why it works for petites
The 5″ inseam is balanced by the high rise, helping to maintain proportions. I drew attention to my waist with the slim, cropped cardigan and pushed back the sleeves to add length through the arms. I finished the look with neutral ballet flats to elongate the leg line—sandals would create the same effect as it gets warmer.

Dress + Sandals

A dress isn’t really a combination, but it is one of the easiest outfits to throw on. This shirtdress from Banana Republic Factory is exactly the kind of piece I reach for day to day. It has well-balanced sleeves, full coverage in the front and back, and is made from breathable 100% cotton.

I hear it often—should petites only wear dresses above the knee? In my opinion, no. A shorter dress can create the illusion of longer legs, and I do wear them, but I moved away from them when my boys were little. It only takes one moment—carrying a baby, bending over, or catching a breeze—to realize they’re not always practical.

I’ve found that midi lengths can work really well for petites, especially when the fit is right. I look for dresses that fit well through the shoulders, chest, and armholes, define the waist, and avoid overly bulky details like large puff sleeves. In this case, the vertical stripes also help create a lengthening effect.

Why it works for petites
This midi dress is well proportioned for petites—it fits well through the shoulders, chest, and armholes, and defines the waist. The vertical stripes add length, and I paired it with light, neutral sandals to further elongate the leg line.

White Jeans + Denim Top

White jeans and a denim top are a classic combination for spring and summer. I made this look feel a bit more modern by choosing wide-leg jeans and pairing them with a cropped denim top that highlights the rise.

The jeans are from Banana Republic and fit true to size, with a 27.5″ inseam in petite. The top is from Old Navy and fits me well in Petite XS. This is one of the few outfits where I added a necklace—the low V-neck felt a bit bare without it.

This outfit would also look great with white shorts.

Why it works for petites
I highlighted my waist and lengthened my legs with a high rise, and the cropped top further emphasizes that line. I finished the look with light, neutral shoes to keep the leg line long.
