Dress length is always a hot topic when it comes to petite style. While some will say petites should stick to above-the-knee dresses, I’m firmly in the “wear what you love” camp. Maxi dresses can be just as flattering—they’re elegant, elongating, and absolutely wearable on a petite frame when the proportions are right.

If you’re on the hunt for options that actually fit, I’m sharing three petite-friendly maxi dresses that work at 4’10”—no alterations needed.

3 Maxi Dresses for Petites (No Alterations Needed)

My Sizing: I’m 4’10”, and my bust, waist, and hip measurements are 32″, 24″, and 36″. My inseam is 25″ (the measurement from the inside of my leg to my ankle bone). The clothes shown are unaltered and show how they fit me right from the store. I list my sizing beside each item to help you compare when shopping online. When referencing my true size, that is often the smallest option available at a brand or petite xxs/00/24. I wear a size 5 shoe.

Two-Tone Maxi Dress

I first found this Amazon dress last summer, and it was such a surprising find. It reminded me of a style I had seen at Aritzia, so I decided to give it a try. I’ll admit, I expected it to feel a bit cheap based on the photos—but it’s actually beautiful in person. You would never guess it’s an under-$40 Amazon dress.

The top is double-lined and not see-through, and the skirt is textured, fully lined, and moves beautifully as you walk. It’s truly a standout piece. In a pair of flats, it comes right to the floor on me, and it’s just as beautiful styled with heels.

I originally bought this dress in XS and it was a perfect fit. This year, XS hasn’t been as readily available, so I tried a Small and found it still works—though I do prefer the XS fit. Overall, I’d consider this dress true to size. In case you’re wondering, it washes well also. I wash it in cold water and hang it to dry.

Gingham Maxi Dress

I was pleasantly surprised that this dress fits me well, considering how long it appears on the model. The dress has stretch straps, a smocked top, and a tiered maxi skirt. It’s unlined, so it’s a bit sheer; I recommend wearing a slip with it. For size reference, I’m wearing it in XS.

Grace Tiered Dress

A fellow petite creator asked me to try a piece from her collaboration with Dear John, and I was happy to. I was sent the Grace Dress—a 100% Tencel tiered midi in a soft, washed chambray.

Not only does it fit well, but it’s incredibly soft and comfortable. I’m wearing it in XS and love the fit. The straps have stretch, so they adjust to your proportions. Depending on how much you can shorten them, you may be able to wear it with flats—or opt for a heel if you need a little extra length.

Maxi dresses can absolutely work on a petite frame—it just comes down to finding the right proportions. The right fit through the top, thoughtful strap adjustments, and a balanced silhouette make all the difference. If you’ve been on the fence about trying a maxi, this is your sign to give one a try.
